Project Detail

Vanderbilt University West End Neighborhood

Nashville, TN

Owner: Vanderbilt University
Size: 660,000 sf

Situated at a prominent entry onto Vanderbilt’s campus, the West End Neighborhood stands as an iconic and welcoming addition to the campus. This project transformed 12 acres filled with vehicular streets and alleyways into an area that cements Vanderbilt’s commitment to creating a sustainable and inclusive campus. Each of the residential colleges include spaces for studying, collaborative learning, dining and outdoor courtyards. Significant upgrades were also made to the campus infrastructure, including storm water, sanitary, electrical and hot/chilled water systems, to support the redeveloped West End Neighborhood.

In addition to four new residential colleges, nearly 40% of the West End Neighborhood was developed into green space. For the Kensington Promenade, a portion of Kensington Avenue was permanently closed to vehicles and transformed into a pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly pathway with pervious pavers. The Kensington Promenade sits between the residential colleges and the existing homes on Greek Row. An alleyway and parking area were also redeveloped as “The Green”–a large park-like area that can be reserved for university events.
