The Central Utilities Initiative (CUI) is a critical step for Vanderbilt, which has operated as a carbon-neutral campus since 2020, to support future growth and increase the resiliency and redundancy of the utility systems. The phased project included converting the original underground steam distribution system to hot water, new chilled water lines, burying overhead utilities and road improvements.

Highland Energy Plant

The 68,000 sf Highland Energy Plant increases Vanderbilt’s capacity for utility generation and improves distribution lines. To align with Vanderbilt’s goals, the facility was designed and built with sustainability in mind and received LEED Gold certification. Sustainable features include capturing roof water in a bioretention area and the use of pervious pavers throughout much of the hardscape.

Pedestrian, Bike and Vehicular Traffic Improvements

Another goal of the CUI was to create a park-like environment with safe and efficient paths of travel for pedestrians and bikes. 25th Avenue, one of the main thoroughfares through campus, saw significant upgrades, including:

  • Widening sidewalks on both sides of 25th Avenue and adding a planting strip,
  • New bike lanes with enhanced markings and planned connectivity to future bike lanes,
  • Raised pedestrian crosswalks with ADA ramps,
  • Improved stormwater utility connections, and
  • In-pavement lighting to increase nighttime visibility.
