The power of depaving

Cumberland River Compact’s depaving projects replace pavement with green space, improving water quality throughout the watershed. Additionally, depaved areas provide habitats to wildlife and beautify the area. We’re proud to work with the Cumberland River Compact on these impactful projects throughout our community.

A 9-ton excavator roars to life in front of Meharry Medical College’s School of Dentistry. The paved entryway has already been scored, and now the Cumberland River Compact begins to pull up large chunks of the pavement. It’s the first of a total of 2,050 square feet of pavement that will be removed and converted to greenspace. Nearby, students in Meharry’s Physician Assistant (PA) Program fan out across the campus to plant 150 native trees such as American sycamore, Shumard oak, and eastern redbud. Read more.
